Wishing You the Very Best This Season

I wish you the very best as 2011 draws to a close and we move into 2012. I hope that your life is all that you envision, that you find yourself creating from your deepest passion and purpose, and that each of your days is filled with laughter and fulfillment.

As you know, I love the way in which the creative allows us to tap into our truest self. Here is a poem that I love by David Whyte.

Winter Child

Myself at my door
like Blake
at home in his
heaven
my own heart
newly opened
by the news
and my face turned upward
and innocent
toward them.

All the stars
like a great crowd
of creation singing

above the blessed house.

David Whyte

Blessings!

Weekend for the Soul

I spent a lovely weekend at Ocean Shores in early July, led by Rick Clark and Fran Gallo, along with a professional painter and a published poet.  I joined them as a lover of poetry and a novice to writing.  We ate delicious meals prepared by Fran and Rick and did yoga together each day with Fran leading and encouraging us.  Poetry and haiku were the themes as we explored group verse and wandering on the beach to find inspiration as we each wrote our own small poems.  Fran has included photos and poems in her blog.

The combination of a sacred spot, sunny, summer weather, the ocean beach, great conversation, yoga, good food and poetry felt like non-stop soul food.

Here is one of our group poems, based on the photo by Rick to the right of the poem:

Wall’s Necklace

Cracks made of vines,

a jeweler in the form of a spider,

like strings of seeds on snow, on sand.

I look close to investigate,

find beauty and resemblances

at intimate levels.

So sensual

these minimal marks

I gather them all

and spread them on my rising belly.

International Alliance of Holistic Lawyers Conference

The IAHL 2011 Conference is being held at the beautiful and historic Asilomar Conference Center on the Pacific Ocean at Pacific Grove, CA on May 12-15.  The title of the conference is  Celebrating the Past, Envisioning the Future:  No Longer Fringe As We Move to the Center, What’s Next?

Join me at the conference.  I will be leading a visioning session on the future of holistic law for you, the profession and the larger community, as well as a mindfulness CLE. The presenters include thought leaders such as Cheryl Conner, Judi Cohen, Peter Arcese, J Kim Wright, Franca Baroni and Libby Comeaux. Don’t miss this important moment in the shaping of holistic law.  Sign up now.

2011 marks the Twentieth Anniversary of IAHL. “In this time we have held out our lanterns, shining light on the many pathways of holistic law. We have held the vision of a future where lawyers are valued beyond their warrior skills, where relationships are forefront, where we are peacemakers and healers.

This year, we come together again to renew, revise and recreate that vision, using valuable tools eschewed by many – imagination, intuition, dreaming, and insight.

In addition to the stimulating and exciting presentations, the program will include a celebration of IAHL’s 20 years, our annual membership meeting, yoga, time for meditation and walks on the beach, and more!”

The Mindful Lawyer–Catching Up With the Curve

If any of you tuned into the recent Wisdom 2 Conference, you know that mindfulness and other awareness practices are being introduced into the entrepreneurial world at a rapid rate. Twitter, Facebook, Google and others were there to discuss the workplace in the 21st century.  Why?  To relieve suffering (“lots of suffering happens at work” per Phillipe Goldin) and optimize performance.  To reduce stress, judgment and reaction.  To increase brain integration.  To enhance focus, well being and creativity…. And the list goes on. Breakthroughs in the study of the brain show that mindfulness practices can alter our brain functioning and ultimately our thoughts, feelings, and actions.  I have seen this repeatedly in my own life and in the lives of my clients.

If you want to read one of  latest books on the topic, try Mindsight:The New Science of Personal Transformation by Daniel Siegel.

Many lawyers are finding that mindfulness not only changes their lives but also transforms their practices.   And now, you can attend a monthly group of lawyers who will explore mindfulness practices (conveniently located at the WSBA offices in downtown Seattle).  See below for the WSBA notice.

Interested in Mindful Lawyering?
This monthly group explores ways in which mindfulness practices may lead to more effective delivery of quality legal services, increased professionalism and lawyer wellbeing and health. The group will be meeting on the last Wednesday of each month, beginning March 30.  Meeting will be in the LAP group room from 8:15 until 9:00 a.m. and there is no charge. For more information, contact Sevilla Rhoads at SRhoads@gsblaw.com. Learn more at http://www.law.buffalo.edu/baldycenter/mindfullaw/.
